November the 5th

"Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot."

I was reminded of these lines when on Nov. 5th, I was chatting with Abhinav, who has just started his PhD in Cambridge. He told me that in UK, at some places they even have fireworks to remember this day... the day when a group being frustrated with England's king's treatment of Catholics tried to assassinate him by blowing up the British parliament in 1605. They even succeeded in bringing lots of gunpowder in the basement of parliament, but were caught at right time.

This historical fact was the inspiration for the movie: "V for Vendetta", in which the hero, V, fights the government which has become totalitarian using the power of media and policing. V's mission is to make people think that it were they who readily gave away their freedom to their government due to constant fears. Now they have become slaves to their own government. The seeds of their liberation lies in their own minds.

The idea is not very far fetched. It has already started happening in various parts of the world. The economic crisis has hastened the process. We have seen that governments have got bigger and bigger in many countries of developed world. People also do not want to take pain which actually should have been the retribution to their excesses and living on too much credit. This has caused governments to get bigger and bigger, stifling the true capitalistic forces.

Even in the realm of personal information, it has become much easier to monitor the citizens because of the percolation of information technology in the society. Nothing is hidden from governments. In some cases, it might be important to monitor it due to so much terroristic activities.

Now the question is that how much is enough? How to balance the need for supervision with the idea of personal liberty and freedom? How much should the government control?
There are still huge risks of governments becoming completely totalitarian. Its not long ago that fascism took over Europe. People like Hitler were demagogues, who got into power by playing on the existing emotions of citizens. Now also, the citizens are in period of great turmoil. World is a very fragile place where there are extreme opinions on nearly all topics. In these kinds of times, demagogue rise to power. Several countries of Europe are already seeing the shift towards extreme right governments. The intellectual capacity and leadership abilities are being ignored; what is counting most is how much a politician can shout and place the blame on others.

There are no quick fixes to this. It is now becoming increasing difficult to predict future course of the world. These are dangerous time .... making sense of non-sense is always difficult.

Starting preparation for CFA Level 2

I am now starting preparation for this big exam. The exam itself is in June, 2011 but it takes huge amount of hard work to clear it.

Recently a colleague of mine cleared his 3rd Level and can now use the designation "CFA"... what joy! He did 4 years of dedicated studies and deserved this designation for himself. May he progress more in life.

The time is less, the course is huge and its an important designation for people working in financial industry. It is also an important milestone in life to increase financial security for family. I could only gather one quotation at this moment:

"The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. "

Dew Drops

You must have seen dew drops: those shiny little pearls on plants after a cold night. The sun makes them shine and gives them colors. Human eye perceives them as be beautiful but have you thought about them as tears?

Have we got ears to listen to the sufferings of plants? Have we got heart which can feel their sufferings? Maybe those beautiful shiny dew drops are tears of plants after suffering in the extremely cold weather. They are cold, the weather is cold. They feel lifeless and cry. But our eyes see the dew as just shiny little droplets.

Have we got ears to listen to sufferings of our fellow humans? Have we got heart which can feel their sufferings? Maybe that beautiful smile they display in front of you, contains ageless pain. They are cold, their surrounding is cold. They are living, yet lifeless. But our eyes only see their smile as the symbol of their happiness.

Learn to feel nature and humans.

How to Teleport yourself?

Step 1- Dissociate yourself into your constituent atoms (remember , even cells are finally made up of atoms). Make a map of as which part of body does each atom belongs. You can use cylindrical coordinate system for it.

Step 2- Transfer yourself over an electric wire to the place you want to go. You may need to charge your atoms. (Take help from a friend, who is in body form)

Step 3- Using the map created in Step 1, re-associate yourself from the constituent atoms into your bodily form.

See.. its easy.

PS: For faster transport, you can even dissociate yourself into quarks. This might reduce travel time.

PS2: The writer does not take any responsibility to whatever happens to you while trying this. but do write back to me, if you are able to get back in your body form.

------------------------
Now some Proposed modifications/improvements by Kush Sharma:

Step 1- A cylindrical coordinate system might work for average humans, spherical and linear systems might be looked at for boundary conditions.

Step 2- Remember, you need a medium to transport! It may be a wire or it might as well be your car.

Step 3- If you lose the map, look at a pic of yourself and try matching it.

PS: This is not the way teleport used to take place in Star Trek. To experience that, ask everyone to close their eyes while you move from one place to the other! :P
